BASIC NORSE/ CELTIC CIRCLE RITUAL

As written by Aidan Odinson over the period 1994 - 2004

Take the dagger in the power hand, aim it at the floor, and proceed deosil from the east, watching the blue light of power proceed from the dagger to the floor.

I consecrate this circle of power to the Ancient Gods. Here may they manifest and bless their child.

Return to the altar and face north. Raise dagger or wand in greeting.

This is a time that is not a time, in a place that is not a place, on a day that is not a day.  We stand at the threshold between the worlds before the Veil of Mysteries.  May the Ancient Ones help and protect us on our magical journey.

Set the water chalice on the pentacle disk, hold dagger over it.

Great Goddess Freyja, bless this creature of Water to your service.  May we always remember the cauldron waters of rebirth.

Hold the dagger over the salt.

Great Goddess Freyja, bless this creature of Earth to your service. May we always honor the blessed Earth, its many forms and beings.

Sprinkle a little salt into the water, elevate the chalice.

Great Freyja, be you adored!

Move deosil and sprinkle the consecrated salt water on the edges of the circle. Return to altar and return chalice to its place.

Place dagger over the lighted incense burner.

Great God Freyr, bless this creature of Fire to your service.   May we always remember the sacred Fire that dances in the form of every creation.

Hold dagger over incense.

Great God Freyr, bless this creature of Air to your service.  May we always listen to the spirit winds that bring us the voices of the Ancient Ones.

Place incense on lighted charcoal, touch censer to pentacle, and elevate censer.

Great Freyr, be you adored!

Carry censer deosil, censing edges of circle, and return to altar.

Light East (yellow) candle, and salute.

I call upon you, Powers of Air, to witness this rite and to guard this circle.

Light South (red) candle, and salute.

I call upon you, Powers of Fire, to witness this rite and to guard this circle.

Light West (blue) candle, and salute.

I call upon you, Powers of Water, to witness this rite and to guard this circle.

Light North (green) candle, and salute.

I call upon you, Powers of Earth, to witness this rite and to guard this circle.

Return to the altar, face North, make the Sign of the Hammer.

Hammar i Nordhri, helga ve thetta ok hald vördh!

Face East, make the Sign of the Hammer.

Hammar i Austri, helga ve thetta ok hald vördh!

Face South, make the Sign of the Hammer.

Hammar i Sudhri, helga ve thetta ok hald vördh!

Face West, make the Sign of the Hammer.

Hammar i Vestri, helga ve thetta ok hald vördh!

Face north, make the Sign of the Hammer in the direction of the sky.

Hammar ufir mir, helga ve thetta ok hald vördh!

Make the Sign of the Hammer in the direction of the ground.

Hammar unter mir, helga ve thetta ok hald vördh!

Facing North, assume the Hammer Stadtha (stand with arms outstretched straight to the sides).

Hammar, helga ve thetta ok hald vördh!

Assume the Eolh Stadtha (arms upward as in the Eolh Rune).

Um mik ok I mir, Asghardr ok Midghardr.

Face north, raise hands in greeting.

This circle is bound,
With power all around.

Within it we stand,

With protection at hand.

Proceed with spellwork. Say the following at completion.

By the powers of the ancient Gods, I bind all power within this circle into this spell.
So mote it be!

********************

Extinguish East candle.

Depart in peace, O Powers of Air, My thanks and blessings.

Extinguish South candle.

Depart in peace, O Powers of Fire, My thanks and blessings.

Extinguish West candle.

Depart in peace, O Powers of Water, My thanks and blessings.

Extinguish North candle.

Depart in peace, O Powers of Earth, My thanks and blessings.

Raise arms in farewell.

To all beings and powers of the visible and invisible, depart in peace.  May there always be love, peace and harmony between us. Our thanks and blessings.

Cut circle with widdershins motion of tool.

The circle is open, yet ever it remains a circle.  Around and through us always flows its magical power.
